Moving your Plants
Are you worried about your house plants and how they'll fare in your upcoming move?
Many professional moving companies consider plants to be perishable items and will not store or transport them over large distances, or even short ones. Check with your moving company of choice to see what their policies are.
A few things to consider about transporting plants:
- Many countries (and many US States) have laws about plants being brought into their state. Check with the government of the location to which you are moving for specifics.
- Potted plants in ceramic containers should be repotted into plastic containers of similar shape and size. This will lessen the likelihood of breakage.
- If possible, transport your plants personally in your own vehicle. Wrap taller plants in plastic (but with holes for ventilation).
- Upon arrival, immediately remove the protective plastic and provide food and water for you plant.
- If the distance of your move is short, consider placing your smaller plants in a sturdy cardboard box, lined with bubble wrap to prevent breaking the containers. Be sure to keep the box upright while moving!
