How to Move on the Cheap
Don't have any butcher paper or bubble wrap? Don't want to clean up packing peanuts? Use clothing to pad your boxes. It's a cheap way to avoid investing in more packing materials.
Put Your Blankets to Another UseRather than purchasing supplies for covering up mattresses and upholstery, use your old blankets to cover up your fabrics. It's cheaper than investing in supplies that will serve the same purpose.
Recycle Local Business' Boxes For ThemStores all around you are discarding boxes everyday. Why pay for boxes when you can get many of them for free? Of course, you'll probably still need some specialized boxes (such as wardrobe and file boxes), but you can cut costs by collecting used boxes.
Collect Your Neighbor's Old NewspapersWhy invest in butcher paper or bubble wrap? Many of the same tasks can be performed with newsprint. Be careful not to use it with surfaces easily dyed though – fabrics and other materials may absorb the dark print. Otherwise, it's a cheap moving substitute.
Got a friend with a pickup truck? If you don't have a lot of stuff, aren't moving far, and you don't mind making a few trips, a friend's pick up can be a lifesaver. Also, some companies allow you to rent trucks for a low daily rate plus mileage. It may turn out to be cheaper than renting a full-blown moving truck or hiring an entire company.
Take Valuables Along in Your CarDon't have the original box for that DVD player? Don't know how to pack it and/or don't have the supplies? When moving over short distances, such items can be carried in your own car in the passenger or backseat, where you can take special care that they arrive safely. Sit the items firmly though, packing with blankets when necessary. You can't focus on items in the car while driving.
Dejunk! Yardsale! Give Stuff Away! You can mitigate the need for boxes and supplies by reducing the amount of stuff you have to pack. Do you really need that old computer that's sitting disconnected in the corner? Do you wear all of the clothes in your closet? These are questions to ask yourself before your move. Reducing junk can reduce stress AND cost when it comes to moving.
