Lifting Tips

Buy Some Donuts!

Buy donuts! It may seem counter-intuitive, but donuts are a great way to snag people, and you'll need all the help you can get when you're moving. Don't be afraid to ask others in advance for help – you'll need it – and so will your back when you're lifting heavy items. Having breakfast available for your volunteers makes the whole experience a bit more enticing.

Dollies, Hand Trucks, and Carts

Some things are just dangerous to lift. Want to move those ten boxes of books in a couple of trips? You're going to need help – you're going to need wheels. Save your back and use a dolly or hand truck.

Gloves

A good pair of working gloves can help you grip difficult surfaces, such as the undersides of desks and other heavy furniture.

Lift with your Legs

Whatever you do, DO NOT lift with your back. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart, lift close to your body, and lift with your legs. If it's too heavy – get help! Depending on your condition, you may need to look into wearing a back belt for added support.

Stay in Shape

Moving in any scenario is physically demanding. If you're not already in the habit, begin stretching and exercising appropriately prior to the move. This can help prevent moving-related injuries.
